A question we get asked often is “how do I know my windows need to be replaced?” Your windows will begin to show when it is time to have them replaced, and it is important to identify the signs early on to stop any further damage. Good quality windows will provide better energy efficiency, be easy to use, enhance curb appeal and much more. If your current windows are not providing any of those benefits, it may be time to start thinking about window replacement.
Here are the top five signs that your windows need to be replaced.
1. Cold Drafts or Poor Energy Efficiency
Do you feel a breeze coming from your windows when they are closed? If so, your current windows could be contributing to an increase in your energy bills. Improving energy efficiency is a common reason why homeowners choose to replace their windows. New windows with high energy efficiency can drastically help lower the cost of your energy bills and improve your home’s energy efficiency.
Double pane and triple pane windows offer better insulation and can maximize energy efficiency compared to single pane windows. To further improve energy efficiency, Argon gas can be inserted between the panes of glass which can help improve the insulation value. All New York Sash windows have injected foam insulation in both the window mainframe and the sash frame which will further improve and enhance the energy efficiency of the windows and of your home.
If your windows are contributing to heat loss and cold drafts it may be time to consider replacing your old windows with new energy efficient windows.
2. Hard to Operate
As windows begin to age and settle they can become harder to operate. If your windows are becoming harder to open, close, or lock it may be time to consider having them replaced. Simple window functions such as opening, closing and locking should be quick and easy and not difficult.
A well-functioning double hung window should easily slide up and down and tilt out for easy cleaning and maintenance. While a slider window should easily slide from side to side with ease.
If your windows are becoming harder to operate it may be time to consider replacing them.
3. Decaying Frames
Another sign that it is time to replace your windows are decaying window frames. When wooden frames are exposed to the elements and moisture overtime, they will begin to decay and rot, which can lead to more problems down the road.
If your frames are soft and wet or starting to chip that means that it is time to have your windows and window frames replaced.

4. Outdoor Noise
Are your windows letting in unwanted noises? If noisy neighbors or the sounds of traffic have become too much to bear, it may be time to take a look at your windows. Replacing old windows with new windows can help reduce the transmission of noise into the home and improve the sound performance.
New double pane and triple pane windows that are insulated with Argon gas can help reduce noise transmission. At New York Sash we offer double and triple pane windows with insulation in both the window sash and the mainframe and Argon gas is added for extra protection.
If you’re windows are letting in too much outside noise, consider switching to double pane or triple pane windows to help dampen the amount of noise.
5. Condensation
Are you experiencing fog and/or condensation on your windows? Depending on where the condensation is on the window, it may not be a cause for concern.
If you are experiencing condensation in between the panes of glass that means that the seal has failed and it is allowing moisture to enter in. Window seals can be fixed, but if your windows are older and are experiencing seal failure, window replacement may be the way to go.
