Anticipation is growing for the 20th annual New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss game! This event started back in 2005 and was only expected to be a one year community event, but 20 years later, this has turned into the biggest and most anticipated hockey event of the season. In honor of the 20th anniversary, we have a lot of exciting surprises in store for the big game. Get ready for an exciting night of hockey, fun & teddy bears!
How The New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss Started:
Utica Pioneer’s head Coach Gary Heenan first brought the idea of having a teddy bear toss in Utica after seeing one at a game in Canada. When he approached Scot; owner of New York Sash, with the idea he jumped at the chance to be on board and has been sponsoring and organizing the game ever since. The Teddy Bear Toss has become a game that everyone looks forward to every year!

- Utica Pioneers hold a 15-2-1 all time record in Teddy Bear Toss games (we still held a Teddy Bear Toss in 2020, despite there being no game!)

2005 was the 1st Teddy Bear Toss vs Hamilton. 453 teddy bears were raised by 1713 fans

2011 was the largest victory. Scoring 12 to 0 over Salve Regina
- 2015 The coveted New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss goal arrived for the first time in the history of the event on a penalty shot
- 2019 was 15th anniversary with the fastest goal ever @ 61 seconds into the game.
- The New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss has been a sell out game for Utica University since 2011. And this year is no exception!
Teddy Bear Toss X Stuff The Bus CNY:
We’re very excited to announce a new partnership with the Teddy Bear Toss and Stuff the Bus CNY. Stuff the Bus is a local giving initiative created by Roser Communications Network back in 2008.
Over the past 16 years, Stuff the Bus has collected and distributed hundred of thousands of toys for children in need here in the Mohawk Valley.
Through yearly collections and Stuff the Bus stops during the holiday season, they have been able to make the holidays brighter and happier for children in need. We couldn’t think of a better way to spread Christmas cheer to even more children this holiday season, than with Stuff the Bus!

The 20th annual New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss is Saturday, December 7th at the Adirondack Bank Center in Utica, where the Pioneers will be taking on SUNY Geneseo in what is expected to be a great game! The game will be broadcasted live on WKTV! If you can’t make it to the game, but would still like to donate, donations can be dropped off at our Showroom at 349 Oriskany Blvd in Whitesboro.
